Mumbai: Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning today (October 10) in the state to pay tributes to industrialist and Padma Vibhushan recipient, Ratan Tata. A statement quoting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde cited that the national flag on government offices in Maharashtra would be flown at half-mast as a mark of mourning today.
Tata’s mortal remains have been kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai for people to pay tributes. It will be kept there till 4pm today. His last rites will be performed in Worli area of Mumbai later in the day. Marine Drive road in Mumbai has been closed beyond the Oberoi hotel as the police have cordoned off the road leading to NCPA. Ratan Tata will be given state funeral. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the last rites. Visitors have been advised to use Gate 2 and Gate 3 to pay tributes at the NCPA.
The Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons passed away on Wednesday at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. He was 86. He was in a critical condition and was under intensive care due to age-related ailments.
Leader of Opposition in Odisha mourns
Taking to social media, leader of Opposition in Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, mourned over his demise. “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of visionary industrialist, philanthropist #RatanTata. He was a shining beacon of India’s entrepreneurial spirit. He has left an indelible legacy in the business landscape across the world which will inspire future generations. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family, friends and followers in the hour of grief. #OmShanti,” Patnaik wrote on X, while sharing alongside a picture of his with Ratan Tata.
‘Goodbye my dear lighthouse…’
Shantanu Naidu, Ratan Tata’s trusted assistant, mourned the loss of India’s renowned business tycoon. He shared a ‘goodbye’ post on social media that read: ‘Grief is the price to pay for love’.
In his LinkedIn post, Naidu—the closest aide of Tata—wrote: “The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse.”
