Bhubaneswar: It was on this day 24 years back that Naveen Patnaik along with several other erstwhile Janata Dal (JD) leaders founded the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), months after the demise of his father and former chief minister Biju Patnaik.
Flanked by Ramakrushna Patnaik and Bijoy Mohapatra and a host of others, who broke away from JD and formed BJD, Naveen had stressed redressing the alleged wrong treatment meted out to the people of Odisha by the ruling Congress in the state.

“The contempt with which the Congress party, both in the state and in the Centre, has treated the people of Odisha, is what we are going to try to redress. Our duty is to fulfil my father’s dreams. All standing and seating here are part of his family, and as a part of his family, we will take his vision well into the next century,” he had said while seated under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Odisha Assembly in 1997.
