Bhubaneswar: Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik on Monday expressed satisfaction with the progress of work after visiting the project site of India’s first indoor athletics stadium, which is coming up in the Kalinga Stadium complex.
The indoor stadium, being built at a cost of Rs 120 crore, will be ready by this year.
“This indoor athletic facility will be a major boost for the development of athletics in India and will become the hub to create champions in coming years,” Naveen said after inspecting the site.
Once ready, the facility will be able to host national and international indoor athletic events. There will be residential facility for training of more than 100 athletes.
The CM visited the Tennis Centre project also, where the centre court is being constructed to make it fit for hosting national and international events like ITF tournaments, Davis Cup etc.

Both the Indoor athletics stadium and Tennis Centre are part of State Sports Infrastructure Development Project under the 5T initiative of state government.
An indoor aquatics stadium, Hockey HPC building and staff accommodation are also among projects worth over Rs 300 crore under construction in the Kalinga Stadium premises.
CM watches women’s football league match
After inspecting the various facilities under construction, Naveen watched a match of the Odisha Women’s Football League at the main football pitch of Kalinga Stadium. He interacted with women footballers and assured them all support for their career.
The chief minister then met players of the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams and enquired about their stay and practice facilities.
He wished them good luck for the upcoming FIH Pro League matches, assured them of full support and hoped that they will get medals for the country in Asian and Commonwealth Games this year.
