New Delhi: It was business as usual for Narendra Modi as he travelled to West Bengal for another round of Lok Sabha election campaigning on Sunday.
Little did he know that a surprise gift awaited him on a day which is celebrated as Mother’s Day.
As he addressed a public rally in Hooghly, the PM noticed two men holding portraits of him with his mother, late Heeraben Modi.
He was quick to acknowledge their touching gesture and expressed his gratitude to the two men.
“There are two gentlemen here who have brought pictures. They have been standing for along and holding up the sketches. Your arms will ache, brothers… But they have brought these with so much love, and that too, these are portraits of my mother,” Modi said.
The PM requested Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel to collect the framed pictures – one showing Modi sitting on the floor with his hand on mother’s lap and the other where Heeraben’s hand is on her son’s shoulder — from the men.
“You write your name and address at the back… I will definitely write back to you. I want to thank both of them for bringing pictures of my mother,” Modi said.

Modi won over the audience by saying that people in the West celebrate this day as Mother’s Day, “but in India we worship our Mother, Ma Durga, Ma Kaali and Bharat Mata 365 days a year.”
Modi, who is seeking a third straight term as India’s Prime Minister, lost his mother last year.
Heeraben passed away on December 30, 2023 in Ahmedabad at the age of 99.
