New Delhi: In an unconventional move, an Uttarakhand police vehicle entered the emergency ward of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh on Tuesday to arrest a nursing officer who allegedly molested a female doctor at the premier health facility. A video of the incident went viral on social media where the police vehicle can be seen manoeuvring through the crowded emergency ward of the hospital.

In the 26-second clip, security personnel can be seen clearing the way for the white police SUV, pushing stretchers aside, as patients lay on them on both sides of the hallway. The accused, Satish Kumar, allegedly molested the doctor on the hospital premises on Sunday evening and also sent an obscene SMS to her, Rishikesh Kotwali SHO Shankar Singh Bisht was quoted as saying by News18.   The incident sparked anger among the resident doctors who raised slogans outside the office of the Dean Academics on Monday, demanding action against the accused.

A case was registered at Rishikesh Kotwali following the protest by doctors.

The accused nursing officer, Satish Kumar was suspended and arrested on Tuesday evening.

Later on Wednesday, the protesting resident doctors demanded the “termination” of the accused’s service. The resident doctors gathered outside the office of the Dean (Academics) and again raised slogans. According to Medical Superintendent Sanjiv Kumar Mittal, they demanded the nursing officer’s immediate termination of service and said that mere suspension was not enough for the offence he had committed.

They also demanded the suspension of assistant nursing superintendent ANS Sinoj who had put the nursing officer on duty. Emergency services and 90 per cent of the operation theatres at the hospital are operational but senior and junior doctors continue to be on strike since Tuesday over the incident. A letter was written to the higher authorities for the nursing officer’s dismissal and a notice was served to Sinoj asking him to explain within 72 hours, Mittal said.
