New Delhi: Adorning Kerala’s traditional Kasavu saree, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday took oath as a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad as he held a Constitution book in her hand. She took oath in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and MPs seated in Parliament.
She wore a Kasavu saree from Kerala
Her off-white saree with a gold border seemed to carry a message of her active working in Kerala’s Wayanad. Her husband Robert Vadra and their children, and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge were present in the gallery of the Lower House as she took oath.
With the 52-year-old’s entry into the Lok Sabha, the Parliament now has three members of the Gandhi family for the first time in decades. She has joined her brother, Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi in a boost to the Opposition’s strength in the Parliament. While Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi will sit in the Lok Sabha, their mother Sonia Gandhi is now a Rajya Sabha member as she chose not to fight the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli. Rahul had won the last Lok Sabha polls from both Wayanad and Raebareli. As he chose to continue as Raebareli MP, his Wayanad set fell vacant, necessitating a bypoll that Priyanka won comfortably with a record-breaking margin of votes.
Following her victory, Priyanka had said she looked forward to being the voice of the people in Parliament.
On Thursday, before Priyanka walked into the Parliament, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi asked her to pause for a while and clicked her photograph on his mobile phone.
With her entry, there was excitement and happiness among Congress MPs. Many dubbed it to be a ‘historic moment.’ Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “I am delighted as we had campaigned for her. I am happy that she won…as you can see, she is appropriately dressed in a Kerala saree.”
Both Houses of Parliament adjourned till noon over Adani issue
Meanwhile, both the Houses of the Parliament were adjourned till noon amid protests and sloganeering by Opposition parties demanding discussion over US indictment of billionaire, Gautam Adani, his nephew and other officials of his port-to-energy conglomerate.
