Puri: The Jagannath Temple here reopened for devotees on Tuesday, after remaining closed for 22 days from January 10. The temple was closed after a surge in COVID-19 and its variant Omicron cases.

The decision to reopen the temple was taken at the Chhatisha Nijog meeting on January 28. Accordingly, arrangements were made and COVID safety protocols issued for the entry of devotees to the 12th century shrine.
While devotees from outside Puri are allowed entry through the Lion’s Gate, residents of Puri Municipality are allowed through the West Gate. However, the temple will remain closed on Sundays for sanitisation.
About 18 platoon forces have been deployed inside and outside the shrine to ensure adherence to COVID-19 protocols, stated a release by the SJTA.
The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the SJTA in connection with the reopening of the temple are as follows:
Darshan deities allowed from 6 am to 9 pm on all days. Temple will remain closed for public darshan on all Sundays for sanitisation purposes to contain the spread of coronavirus.
All devotees will be required to bring their photo ID Card, namely, Aadhaar/ Voter ID or any other photo ID card for identification, along with final certificate for COVID-19 vaccination or those not vaccinated have to carry a COVID-19 negative certificate (RT-PCR). the testing has to be done within 96 hours prior to their visit to the temple.
All pilgrims must wear masks at all times; inside and outside the temple. Those flouting the norms will be fined and entry to temple may also be banned
Devotees should maintain physical distance at all times as per COVID-19 guidelines.
