In the morning, INDIA bloc leaders started their march from Parliament towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) office to demand the resignation of CEC Kumar.
They couldn’t get too far as police had set up dozens of barricades. Rahul and some other leaders tried to jump over the obstacles, but they were stopped. Rahul, Priyanka, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Trinamool Congress’ Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien, NCP Pawar’s Sanjay Raut were among those detained to prevent them from moving towards ECI.
After they were released some time later, Rahul, Priyanka and other Congress leaders entered the Akashvani Bhawan during the afternoon, which is a stone’s throw from ECI.
They asked police to be allowed to go and meet the CEC, but were not given permission. Rahul, Priyanka then sat down near a tree.
Not in a mood to move away despite repeated pleas by police, the Congress leaders and some other INDIA bloc MPs were eventually taken into buses and detained around 8 pm.
