New Delhi: Having brought the country many laurels during her heydays, India’s athletics queen PT Usha is now looking to ‘create milestones’ in public life.
The ‘Payyoli Express’, as she was nicknamed for scorching the tracks around the world, Usha had the honour of presiding over proceedings of the Rajya Sabha for some time.
Usha, who was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the BJP in July 2022, took charge of the upper House of Parliament in the absence of Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar.
“Great power involves great responsibility’ as said by Franklin D Roosevelt was felt by me when I chaired the Rajya Sabha session. I hope to create milestones as I undertake this journey with the trust and faith vested in me by my people,” Usha tweeted on Thursday along with a Sansad TV clip showing her proud moment.
Last December, Usha became the first nominated MP to be part of the panel of Vice-Chairpersons of Rajya Sabha who conduct proceedings of the house when the Chairman and Deputy Chairman are not available.
Elected president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) last year, Usha bagged 4 gold and 7 silver medals in Asian Games besides Asian Championships and World Junior meet medals.
She missed out on an Olympic medal by a hair’s breadth when she finished fourth in women’s 400m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles 1984 Olympics.
