Cuttack: Hemant Das has over 100 cases of thefts and burglaries against him (he claims the number exceeds 500, but police say it’s 110). Breaking into houses since the eighties, Das (59) has been to jail several times (at least 70 times, he claims).
After he was caught again by police, this time in Cuttack on Monday in yet another burglary case, Das, who breaks into houses alone using a crowbar earning him the moniker ‘Crowbar Man’, told reporters that he cannot say for sure that he won’t rob houses anymore once he was out of jail and that he can change his ways.
He was last arrested in October 2021 for a theft in Bhubaneswar. This time, Badambadi police arrested Das in connection with theft of gold ornaments worth over Rs 3 lakh from a house in Cuttack’s Vikas Nagar area.
Das started out as a driver. He was first arrested in an assault case in the 80s. During his stay in jail, he met a prisoner who taught him how to break into houses.
