Bhubaneswar: Many parts of Odisha are likely to experience thunderstorm activity and heavy rain till the morning of July 17, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
In view of the weather forecast, the IMD has issued yellow warnings for several districts of the state till July 17. Thunderstorm with lightning, gusty surface winds and heavy rainfall may occur in these districts during the period.
In its midday bulletin, the IMD said thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds with speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph may occur at some places over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Koraput districts in next 24 hours.
The weather conditions are expected to remain similar on July 12 and July 13, with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
On July 14, the weather agency has predicted thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind over Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
This apart, heavy rainfall is likely to lash some places in these two northern districts. Similar weather conditions will continue on July 15 as well.
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph is likely over Sundargarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj and Koraput. Heavy rainfall has also been forecast at isolated places in Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
From July 16, heavy rain is very likely to occur at one or two places in Baleshwar, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
On July 17, heavy rainfall is again expected at isolated places in Bargad, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
The weather agency has advised people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and open areas, and to remain cautious while venturing out. Farmers have been asked to take necessary precautionary measures for standing crops. Residents of low-lying areas have also been urged to stay alert in view of possible waterlogging due to heavy rain.
