Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the Lok Sabha and Odisha Assembly elections in 2024, political configurations are set to undergo a transformation in the state with possible realignment of groups.
Both the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are likely to encounter a major challenge from disgruntled leaders of their parties in the run up to the next polls.
The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD had to pay a heavy price by refusing ticket to Rajandra Das in the bypoll to Dhamnagar Assembly constituency in Bhadrak district last year. Political analysts are of the view that the same story may be repeated in 2024 if disgruntled elements in major parties come together and align to queer the pitch for BJD and BJP.
Political circles in the state are now witnessing a wide range of speculations after former Union Minister Dilip Ray’s birthday celebrations last week. While some feel that Ray is moving close to BJD, others are of the opinion that the former Rourkela MLA may play a new card by bringing together unhappy leaders of major political parties before 2024.
It is to be seen whether a new political equation, centering around Ray, emerges with active participation of leaders like ex-Minister and former Morada legislator Praveen Chandra Bhanjadeo and BJD MLA from Khandapada Soumya Ranjan Patnaik.
The presence of Bhanjadeo as well as Patnaik at the blood donation camp organised on the occasion of Ray’s birthday has triggered speculations in political circles.
The development came a day after senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra held an impressive meeting at Patkura in Kendrapada district without any party flag or banner. He hinted at a big plan ahead. The very next day, Ray’s birthday celebrations attracted several leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhanjadeo and his wife described Ray as a very simple man. “Dilip babu is a nice and simple person. He has been working hard for the people. His work and contributions are recognised all over the country,” the former Morada MLA said.
It may be noted here that Bhanjadeo quit BJD and joined BJP ahead of the 2019 elections in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but he failed to get a saffron party ticket. He has been sulking since then.
On the other hand, Ray had quit BJP in 2018 and speculations were rife about his return to BJD ahead of 2019 polls. But it did not happen. He has been keeping away from political activities for quite some time.
Soumya Patnaik, on his part, has been frequently giving embarrassing moments to the BJD government by making critical statements despite being in the ruling party.
Observers are of the view that Odisha’s political turn may witness many changes in the months to come. There will be realignment of forces before 2024 elections. One has to wait and watch to know whether Ray returns to the BJD fold or forms a new group to try his luck in the political firmament.
