Washington: US President Joe Biden justified his much-criticised call for a complete withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan during his address to the nation on the Afghan crisis.
“We accomplished our mission in Afghanistan a decade ago & we stayed a decade more. It was time to end this war. I refuse to open another decade of warfare in Afghanistan,” Biden was quoted as saying by several news agencies.
Biden assured the Americans that the administration will make arrangements for those who still remain in Afghanistan. “For those Americans who remain in Afghanistan, the US will make arrangements to get them out if they so choose. He also says the U.S. will continue to work to get out Afghan allies. We are far from done,” the US President said.
Biden believed that the decision was in the best interest of the country. “I believe this is the ‘right decision, wise decision and the best decision’. The war in Afghanistan is now over. I am the fourth president to have faced this issue on how to end this war… I made a commitment to Americans to end this war, I honoured it.”
