Paralakhemundi: The Block Education Officer (BEO) of Mohana block in Odisha’s Gajapati district has cautioned school teachers that they would not get their salary if they fail to wear helmet while riding a two-wheeler.

BEO Narendra Behera has warned teachers of all government schools that strict action will be taken against them if they are not found wearing a helmet and steps will be taken to withhold their monthly salary as well.

All school principals have been notified that both male and female teachers will have to abide by it every time they ride a two-wheeler even when it is for personal purposes and not for commuting to school. A letter has been sent in this regard on Thursday to all schools in the block.

Incidentally, deaths due to road accidents among teachers have increased in the district in the last few years. The BEO’s decision comes a few days after a road accident claimed a teacher’s life because he was not wearing a helmet.

“The purpose is not to stop their salary but to create awareness and ensure that as they step out of their house, their family members too are cautious and see that they have put on their helmet,” Behera told media.

The decision has been welcomed by the teachers as well who often ride through difficult hilly roads and in harsh weather conditions. “If we put on our helmets, we will be safe for our family members. Others too will learn from us,” a teacher told media.
