New Delhi: Actor Arun Govil, who became a household name after playing the role of Lord Ram in the Ramayan TV series, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Thursday.
The 63-year-old Govil said the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi changed his perception about politics and that the objection raised to ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the “immediate trigger” for him to take the plunge.
He made his Bollywood debut in Rajshri Productions’ ‘Paheli’ in 1977, and acted in quite a few films as well as TV serials. But nothing earned him more fame and popularity than Ramayan, written and directed by Ramanand Sagar, which was aired on Doordarshan in 1987-88.
Ramayan, which was re-aired during lockdown last year, became the most-watched TV show.
“Rebroadcast of #Ramayana on #Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April,” Doordarshan had tweeted.
