New Delhi: During his marathon speech at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on Sudarshan Chakra Mission—a name inspired by mythology and sounding apt a day ahead of Janmastami— has left all guessing as to what is this mission to create an aerial shield and precision counter-strike capabilities in the next 10 years, by 2035.
“Mission Sudarshan Chakra will enable a powerful weapon system which will not only neutralise the enemy’s attack but will also hit back at the enemy many times over,” Modi said. The PM also added that “the protective shield will keep expanding so that every citizen feels secure, and whatever kind of technology is used against India, our technology will prove to be superior”.
PM Modi said that India’s “Sudarshan Chakra Mission will be a fully modern system, with its research, development, and manufacturing done entirely in India.” “Like the precision of the Sudarshan Chakra, we will also make arrangements for targeted missile action,” the PM said.
“The new technology platforms under the Rashtra Suraksha Kavach initiative will be deployed to protect every place of national significance, critical infrastructure such as hospitals, religious sites, and other sensitive locations with emerging technologies,”the PM said, adding that this will allow India to strike enemies with precision.

What is this Sudarshan Chakra?
After Pakistan unsuccessfully fired over 1000 missiles at India during Operation Sindoor, there are possibilities, as claimed by Hindustan Times, that this announcement is about building anti-ballistic missile defence and long range conventional ballistic missiles to tackle stand-off weapons.
Top national security planners, as quoted by Hindustan Times, believe that PM has hinted towards expansion of DRDO’s Project Kusha or Extended Range Air Defence System, which includes development of long-range surface to air missile systems with three variants of interceptors between 2028 and 2030.
The Kusha Project was cleared by the CCS for development in May 2022. As part of this project, the missile testing will begin later this year.
According to experts quoted by NDTV, this could also be like Israel’s much-vaunted Iron Dome and the United States’ proposed Golden Dome.
