Mumbai: Much before he moved from Punjab to Mumbai with dreams of becoming a singer, Kapil Sharma tried to join the Border Security Force (BSF).
Recalling his early days of struggle, the man who is now one of India’s best stand-up comedians and hosts the popular The Kapil Sharma Show said his father wanted him to do something substantial with his life.
“People will laugh if I tell them how I started. Maine pehle BSF ke liye try ki, fir army mein gaya (I first tried for the BSF and then the Army)… my father and uncles were part of the police force,” Kapil told IANS.
His father pushed him to pursue music, revealed Kapil.
“Papa kaafi musicians ko jante the and ended up introducing me to them (my father knew many musicians and ended up introducing me to them). He wanted me to do something big, maybe something creative in life,” Kapil said.
The first time he went to Mumbai with his friends, he used to roam around Juhu beach.
“We would look out for directors… as if they had nothing better to do in life,” said Kapil, adding that he was grateful to Mumbai which made him a star and a big brand.
“Mumbai gives scooterwalas like me an opportunity to stand on a stage and entertain people,” remarked Kapil.
The 40-year-old, who is set for is digital debut with Netflix’s stand-up show ‘I am Not Done Yet’, made his presence felt in the entertainment industry by winning reality TV show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ in 2007. He went on to host ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ and ‘Family Time with Kapil’.
