Mumbai: The Karan Johar-directed ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ had dealt with adultery, leading to some raised eyebrows.
The 2006 film had Rani Mukherjee, paired opposite Abhishek Bachchan, falling for Shah Rukh Khan who, played Preity Zinta’s husband.
The film featured an intimate scene between Rani and Shah Rukh, who were involved in an extra-marital relationship.
Aditya had reservations about the sex scene but Karan was adamant and went ahead with it.
The ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ director admitted in a recent interview that Aditya was right.
“I was shooting that sequence, and I was at this big location that was snowed out, and Adi called me. He said, ‘Listen, I’ve been thinking about it for the last couple of days, and it’s very strongly in my head. I don’t think they should have sex. I feel like India will not accept it. They should come to the point, and retract, because they’re guilty about it’. I was like, ‘No, I’m going to do it. How can you be in a relationship and not have sex’?” Karan recalled during his appearance on Anupama Chopra’s All About Movies podcast.
“So, we had this big fight over the phone, and I was rebellious about it. Much later, when I sat down with the film and thought about it, I feel that he was right. Not optically or anything, but commercially. I feel the country would’ve been far more receptive of the love story had they not gone ahead with a physically intimate relationship,” Karan added.
‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ did moderate business, with a gross collection of Rs 110.26 crore worldwide.
Karan is currently filming his latest directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’ in Gulmarg with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh.
