When Will Women’s Reservation Bill Be Implemented? Check Law Minister’s Response

Jaipur: The Women’s Reservation Bill sailed through both Houses of Parliament with just 2 votes against it.

But when will it actually be implemented?

The Opposition parties, despite having backed the long-pending bill, have said that the Central government will delay the process and it could take five years or more before it becomes law.

Union Law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday brushed aside the Opposition’s claims and said that the Women’s Reservation Bill could be implemented any time post 2026, after the completion of population census and delimitation of Parliament and Assembly seats.

“The census and the delimitation will play an important factor in deciding the reserved seats as per terms of the bill. The bill could be implemented any time after 2026. The Opposition, which failed even to bring this bill during their tenure, is making it an issue unnecessarily,” Meghwal told mediapersons in Jaipur.

“When the UPA govt came in 2004, don’t know why but they decided to pass it (Women’s Reservation Bill) in Rajya Sabha first. In Lok Sabha, Congress could not gather enough strength as on one side there was power and on the other side, there was this bill. The Congress dropped the Bill to save its government,” Meghwal remarked.
