New Delhi: Two-time World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh played one Test match and 6 ODIs for India. A contemporary of Kapil Dev, Yograj was a temperamental fast bowler known for his controversial comments.
In a recent interview, the 66-year-old revealed that he once went to Kapil Dev’s house with a pistol to shoot him on the head!
What was the reason for his rage?
Speaking on ‘Unfiltered with Samdish’, Yograj said he wanted to kill Kapil because he had been dropped from the side.
Yograj said that he did not go through with the plan because Kapil Dev came out of his house with his mother.
“When Kapil Dev became captain of India, North Zone, and Haryana, he dropped me for no reason,” Yograj claimed.
“My wife (Shabnam Kaur, now divorced) wanted me to ask Kapil questions. I told her that I would teach this bloody man a lesson. I took my pistol out, went to Kapil’s house in Sector 9. He came out with his mother. I abused him a dozen times. I told him because of you I have lost a friend and what you have done, you will pay for it.
“I told him, ‘I want to put a bullet through your head, but I am not doing it because you have a very pious mother, who is standing here.’ I told Shabnam, ‘Let’s go’,” Yograj recalled.
According to Yograj, he decided to stop playing cricket after getting dropped from the North Zone team allegedly due to Kapil Dev and the late Bishan Singh Bedi’s politics.
Yograj further claimed that senior players were instrumental in getting him axed because he was good friends with Sunil Gavaskar.
“These guys, including Bishan Singh Bedi, they plotted against me. I never forgave Bishan Singh Bedi. The man died on his bed. When I was dropped, I spoke with Ravinder Chadha, one of the selectors. He told me that Bishan Singh Bedi (chief selector) didn’t want to pick me because they thought I was Sunil Gavaskar’s man and because I was playing cricket in Mumbai, I was very close to Gavaskar,” Yograj remarked.
“That was the moment I decided I would not play cricket, Yuvi will play,” Yograj said.
