New Delhi: Amid election fever, there was hype over Elon Musk’s visit to India this month.
The Tesla CEO was expected to announce plans to enter the Indian market and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during two-day trip on April 21 and 22.
However, Musk’s India visit is not materialising now.
Musk, who is also the SpaceX CEO and boss of social media company X Corp., said his visit to India had to be delayed due to “very heavy Tesla obligations.”
“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” Musk tweeted.
Last week, Musk had written that he was “looking forward” to meeting PM Modi.
Now, he has to reportedly attend a crucial conference call on April 23 in the United States to answer questions about Tesla’s first-quarter performance.
Musk was expected to announce mega investment of $2-3 billion to build a factory in India for entry-level cars.
Optimism grew after the BJP-led Central government recently announced a policy lowering high tariffs on imported cars if firms invest locally.
There were also reports that the billionaire may unveil plans to introduce Starlink, a satellite network that provides high-speed internet connection.
The Indian PM has met Musk twice — during a Tesla factory visit in the US in 2015 and then during his 2023 state visit to the US.
Modi said in a recent interview that Musk is a supporter of India.
