Durgapur: An induction programme organised by seniors for freshers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur, West Bengal, was reportedly disrupted recently after a lady professor objected to the song and dance performances.
A debate has now been triggered over what is appropriate on a college stage after a video of the show went viral on social media.
The incident reportedly took place on August 22, during the second day of the institute’s 2026 induction programme. The event included a series of student performances, with students dancing to popular Bollywood tracks such as ‘Chikni Chameli’, ‘Baby Doll’ and ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’, as reported by The Times of India.
The video shows a group of students performing on stage while their peers cheer from the audience. Their performance was, however, interrupted when a professor walked in and questioned whether the students had received permission from their faculty advisers.
“Where is the approval? Have you taken approval before showing such kind of dance here? Is it a joke? Is it an introduction? Is it a fest,” she is heard asking the students.
She then raised concerns about the performance taking place in front of junior students and asked why their faculty adviser was not present.
“In front of juniors, you are dancing on such songs. Where is your faculty advisor? Why are they not present? Have you shown dances to them? Was it approved,” the professor wanted to know.
The show stopped thereafter, while some students tried to answer the professor’s queries, The Indian Express reported.
