Wife Of ‘Harassed’ JE Alleges Police Inaction Against Patnagarh MLA

Balangir: The wife of Junior Engineer (JE) Jaykant Sabar on Saturday alleged that even though there is a threat to her family members, police has so far not taken any action against Patnagarh MLA Saroj Meher.

“It has been 48 hours since I lodged a complaint against the BJD MLA but there has been no follow-up action,” said Jaykant’s wife.

The family members of Jaykant Meher have gone to their village in Nuapada district, as they fear for their life.

“My life is at risk now. My family members are panicking. We have come to our village,” said Jaykant.

Members of the Odisha Diploma Engineers’ Service Association have also raised their voice against the incident and demanded immediate arrest of Saroj Meher.

“We will intensify our stir if our demand is not fulfilled. Police should take proper action against the culprit,” said the president of the association.

It may be recalled that the newly elected BJD MLA of Patnagarh, Saroj Meher, was allegedly ‘punished’ following allegations by the local people about the poor construction quality of a road in the area. A video clip that went viral on social media on June 5, shows Meher directing Jayakant Sabar to do 100 sit-ups in five minutes at Belapada. Though the official is seen pleading with the MLA with folded hands to spare him, Meher is seen threatening him to do the sit-ups or else be prepared to be beaten black and blue by the people.

On June 6, the engineer’s wife filed a complaint against the MLA at the Patnagarh police station.

The Opposition Congress and the BJP too, strongly condemned the MLA’s behaviour.
