New Delhi: Led by the Omicron variant, COVID-19 infections in India could see a steep rise in the coming weeks, according to some top experts, who noted that the variant was already in community transmission and there were more patients landing in hospitals despite a decline in infections in major cities.
As many as 3,06,064 new infections were reported in the country in the last 24 hours on Monday, said the health ministry. There was an 8 per cent decline in the average daily cases reported in the country in the last four days.
However, the weekly positivity rates have gone up to 17.03 per cent in the week till Monday, January 24, from 0.63 per cent on December 27, 2021, thanks to the Omicron variant.
“Omicron is now in community transmission in India and has become dominant in multiple metros,” a report by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) said.
According to the advisory group, most cases of Omicron variant have been mild, though there was a rise in cases of hospitalisation and intensive care.
