Bhubaneswar: The low-pressure area, which formed on Thursday over the Gulf of Martaban and adjoining Myanmar, intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area and later into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
“Depression has formed over Gulf of Martaban and adjoining Myanmar at 0830 hours IST of today, the 20th May about 40 km southwest of Mawlamyine (Myanmar) and 700 km northeast of Port Blair. To move northeastwards and cross south Myanmar coast around Mawlamyine by today evening,” the IMD tweeted.
It did not issue any specific forecast for Odisha.
Under the influence of the system, squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over north Andaman Sea and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal during the next five days.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning in several districts of Odisha in the next 24 hours. Yellow warning has been issued for 15 districts — Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.
