Bhubaneswar: In a significant development, the Central government has approved premature repatriation of senior IPS officer Y B Khurania to Odisha amid speculation about his appointment as the next DGP of the state.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the proposal of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to repatriate the 1990-batch IPS officer to his parent cadre Odisha with immediate effect, said a notification issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions on Friday.
He is serving as Special Director General, Border Security Force (BSF), Western Command.
With the senior IPS officer returning to Odisha, talks are now on about his possible appointment as the next police chief of the state. At present, Odisha does not have a full-fledged DGP. Arun Kumar Sarangi has been functioning as DGP in-charge since December 31, 2023.
The senior IPS officer was serving as Additional DGP (Provisioning) in Odisha before proceeding on central deputation. Khurania had earlier held several important posts in Odisha and served as Superintendent of Police of Nayagarh, Jajpur, Rourkela, Mayurbhanj and Ganjam districts.
He also served as DIG of southern range and northern range, Addl Commissioner of Police and Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack. He was also the Director, BPSPA-cum-IG Training.
Before his current posting, he was posted as Special DG (Operations) at BSF HQs in New Delhi.
