Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar has said there is no forecast for cyclones in Odisha in the next 15 days.
H R Biswas, Director of IMD’s regional centre here, said although conditions seem favourable, there is no forecast for likely formation of a cyclone in the next 15 days. Biswas was briefing senior officials of the Odisha government, national and state agencies during the state-level cyclone preparedness meeting on Monday. Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Mahapatra chaired the meeting.
Due to the return of the Southwest monsoon, especially in October and November, severe storms are experienced in Odisha from this month. At times, this period stretches up to mid-December.
Earlier, the IMD predicted the formation of a fresh cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal in the second half of this month (October 14 to October 20). There is likelihood of formation of a cyclonic circulation over east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea during week 2 with a low probability of its further intensification and west-northwestwards movement, the North Indian Ocean Extended Range Outlook for Cyclogenesis said.
