Mumbai: The Uddhav Thackeray-headed Maharashtra government was pushed to the brink on Wednesday as 34 Shiv Sena MLAs, led by Eknath Shinde, revolted.
Eknath, the state’s Urban Development and Public Works minister and former No. 2 to Uddhav, reportedly landed in a Surat hotel along with a group of Shiv Sena MLAs on Monday night.
On Wednesday, a resolution was passed at a ‘Meeting of Shiv Sena Maharashtra Legislative Assembly 2019-2024’, with signatures of 34 MLAs.
Before the revolt, the strength of coalition MVA government was 152 in the 288-member state Assembly, with Shiv Sena having 55 MLAs, NCP 53 and Congress 44.
If Sena loses 34 of its 55 legislators, not only will the principal partner be reduced greatly in strength, the government will also lose majority.
CM Uddhav, who has tested COVID positive, is scheduled to address the people through a Fecebook Live.
There is speculation that Uddhav will announce his resignation and the rebel Sena MLAs will join hands with BJP to stake claim to form the government.
