Kolkata: Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli may not make it to the India’s T20 World Cup squad, which will be the major maquee ICC cricket event this year.
However, he will play in IPL 2024 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The selectors are reportedly not keen to include Virat in the India squad for this year’s ICC T20 World Cup as they believe that the veteran has failed to cope with the team’s needs in the shortest format, according to a report in The Telegraph.
The former India skipper had returned to the T20 team in January this year after an absence of more than a year and was asked to change his approach to the game. He batted more aggressively in T20Is against Afghanistan, but failed to score big.
The report further said that the pitch conditions in West Indies and USA, where the match will be played, would not suit him.
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that Rohit Sharma would lead the T20 World Cup squad during the recent England Test series, he remained non-committal on Virat’s participation. The BCCI is likely to take a decision after watching his performance in the IPL.
A good run in the IPL can, however, can force the selectors to reconsider their plans, the report added.
The provisional squads list for the Men’s T20 World Cup will be sent to the International Council (ICC) in the first week of May and the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season is set to form the basis for team selection.
