Amethi: The mighty have fallen and how! Union minister Smriti Irani has broken the impasse in Amethi by winning the Congress bastion, defeating Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

At 6.30 pm, she was leading in the Amethi seat by a significant margin of over 38,000 votes. Conceding defeat, Rahul Gandhi congratulated Irani, saying he hopes that she will serve the constituency lovingly.

Taking to Twitter, Smriti Irani, who was defeated in Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by Rahul Gandhi, picked up a line from a famous ghazal by Dushyant Kumar to imply that nothing is impossible, “Kaun kehta hai aasman mein surakh nahi ho sakta…”.

Congress had held the seat for 39 years.
