Rahul Dravid beat Sachin Tendulkar to the tag of ‘greatest Indian Test batsman’ in a social media poll conducted by Wisden India.
Dravid, who was referred to as ‘The Wall’ during his playing days for a solid technique and impregnable defence, pipped Tendulkar by a narrow margin.
Of the 11,400 fans who took part in the final round of voting, 52% picked Dravid.
“Much like Dravid batted during his playing career, he dug in and fought back in the poll, eventually crossing the line with a decent lead at the very end,” the Wisden India report stated.
Polling started with 16 Indian batting greats, from whom it was pruned to four. Dravid and Tendulkar apart, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar and current India captain Virat Kohli qualified for the ‘semifinals’. In the third place playoff, Gavaskar beat Kohli by a narrow margin.
