Baripada: A woman and her nine-month-old daughter were charred to death at Balimunduli village under Sadar police limits in Mayurbhanj district late on Monday.

According to available information, the woman, identified as Thakuramani Singh (20), was visiting a relative’s house with her daughter. Later, her relatives left for hospital for treatment of a kin, leaving the mother-daughter duo alone in the house.

On returning, they found the two with critical burn injuries.

The duo was immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital. However, the doctors declared the child as received dead while the woman, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital, later succumbed to her injuries.

Meanwhile, Thakuramani’s husband Sunaram Singh said his wife was suffering from mental illness for the last few days. She might have committed suicide by setting herself and her daughter on fire by pouring kerosene, he added.

“The matter is being investigated on the basis of the statements of the deceased woman’s husband and their family members,” informed Baripada Sadar police station inspector-in-charge Swarnalata Minz.
