Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Wednesday arrested five persons in connection with an alleged kidnapping case under Kharavel Nagar police limits in Odisha capital.
Those arrested have been identified as Prapti Sharma (23) of Jamshedpur and Rakesh Chandra Barik (33), Shyamsundar Sahoo (22), Sibaram Behera (28), Akash ku Parida (29), all residents of Bhubaneswar.
According to a police release, Anjita Nayak of Jagatsinghpur, who is currently staying in Jamshedpur, lodged a complaint with police at 10 pm on April 1, alleging that she received a call demanding Rs 10 lakh ransom to release her brother, Somanath Swain (28).
The alleged kidnapper used Somanath’s mobile phone to make the call.
Anjita further mentioned that Prapti, who had been staying with her brother, might be aware of this kidnapping.
Subsequently, three teams were formed to rescue the victim and police cracked the case within 6 hours of registration of the case on the basis of phone call records, CCTV footage and other technical evidence.
The investigation revealed that Somanath was staying at Jharpada for the last three years with Prapti. On March 30, he had a quarrel with Prapti as he suspected her of having an affair with another boy. Amid the heated exchange of words, Somanath assaulted Prapti, who then informed her elder sister about the incident. Her elder sister told about it to her boyfriend Akash, who along with three of his associates, arrived at the rented house in a car and abducted Somanath the same day. They kept him in a hotel near SUM Hospital and called his sister last night, demanding Rs 10 lakh.
The accused were arrested from the hotel and two cars used in the crime along with 8 mobile phones, a wooden stick and a wooden plank seized. One case each was previously pending against Rakesh at Khandagiri police station for theft. Ajaya was earlier caught with 1.16 grams of brown sugar and 26 cases under NDPS Act and for theft and dacoity is registered against him under Jatni police limits, the release added.
