Woman Burnt Alive For ‘Dowry’ In Kendrapara

Kendrapara: A woman was allegedly burnt alive by her in-laws for dowry at Balisua village under Marshaghai police limits in Kendrapara district late on Sunday.

According to sources, the victim, Bharati Swain, sustained 80 per cent burns. She was rushed to Kendrapara hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as a deteriorated condition.

However, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB.

Notably, the woman named her mother-in-law and three other sisters-in-law in her dying statement.

She said that they tied her hands, gagged her mouth and set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her while her husband and father-in-law were away.

Two rooms of the house was also gutted.

Her family members alleged that her in-laws had been torturing her for dowry.

On being informed, the police reached the spot. Based on the statement of the victim, the police have detained the four accused for interrogation.

“Two cases, including attempt to murder and dowry torture, have been filed in connection with the incident. Police along with a scientific team will investigate the incident,” said a police officer of Marshaghai police station.
