Bhubaneswar: The Odisha capital, which has witnessed a five-fold rise in dengue cases in a span of less than four weeks, saw a woman succumbing to the vector-borne disease after her delivery at Capital Hospital.
The deceased woman was from Rajkanika area of Kendrapada district.
According to sources, the pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital on July 23. She underwent C-section to deliver a baby. Four days later, she was detected positive for dengue and was being treated for high fever. However, she succumbed to dengue on Sunday.
“A pregnant woman was admitted to the Capital Hospital for delivery. This was her first pregnancy. She delivered the baby following a surgery. She had tested negative for dengue in tests conducted before the surgery. Since the patient suffered from fever post delivery, her blood sample was sent for tests again on July 27 and it was found positive for dengue,” Capital Hospital Director Dr Laxmidhar Sahoo told the media.
He further said that all necessary treatments were provided to the woman, but she developed dengue shock syndrome and she died during treatment despite best efforts of the doctors.
Notably, the dengue infection tally in the capital city touched 504 on Sunday from around 103 till July 3. The city has at least 15 hot spots, where the number of dengue cases detected in the recent days is more than 10. Half of the dengue beds in Capital Hospital remain occupied with 31 patients undergoing treatment at the health facility, sources in the Health Department said.
Earlier, one patient had died of suspected dengue at the state-run hospital while another in a private facility. However, the authorities are yet to confirm those cases as dengue deaths.
