Balasore: A woman police officer was allegedly assaulted and locked up by miscreants while conducting a raid at gambling den at a village in Talasari area of Odisha’s Balasore district.
As per information, the incident took place at Udaypur village under the jurisdiction of Talasari Marine Police Station in the Bhogarai block of the district on Sunday night.
The woman officer was identified as Champabati Soren, inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Talasari Marine Police Station. Miscreants mounted an attack when she reached a shop in the village to stop gambling activities.
As soon as she reached the spot, the miscreants entered into a heated argument with her following which a scuffle broke out. The miscreants allegedly locked up the IIC in the shop.
The driver of the patrolling vehicle, identified as Sudhansu Mohanty, was also attacked when he tried to stop the miscreants from assaulting the IIC. He reportedly sustained injuries in the attack.
After getting information about the incident, a team from Bhogarai Police Station and Chandaneswar Police Outpost rushed to the spot and rescued the IIC and the driver.
Over 20 people have been detained by the police in connection with the incident. They are being questioned by the police. One platoon of police force was also deployed at the village following the incident to prevent any further untoward incident.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Jaleswar, Dilip Sahu said that the IIC had gone to the shop following information about illegal gambling going on there when she was attacked. Investigation into the incident is underway and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with law against those involved, he said.
