Mumbai: The BCCI on Saturday recommended India pacers Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and women’s team leg-spinner Poonam Yadav for the Arjuna award.
The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators decided on these names at a meeting in New Delhi.
Bumrah, who made his India debut in 2016, will be spearheading India’s campaign in the upcoming World Cup in the UK. The 25-year-old picked 48 wickets in only 9 Tests after making his Test debut in South Africa in 2018. With this feat, he made it to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test team of the year.
Mohammed Shami made a comeback into the ODI squad earlier this year and made it to the 15-member World Cup squad by performing consistently for Team India. The right-arm fast bowler picked 68 Test wickets in 2018. He played a crucial role in India’s Test series win in Australia.
Ravindra Jadeja also made a comeback to the limited-overs side and has been named in the 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup. He is among the top 10 bowlers and all-rounders in Test cricket.
Poonam Yadav is among the top 10 bowlers in women’s cricket.
In 2018, women’s cricket team star opener Smriti Mandhana was the only cricketer to receive the Arjuna award, which is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India to honour excellence in sports.
