Angul: A woman and her seven-year-old daughter were trampled to death by an elephant near Madhupur village under Bantala police limits in Odisha’s Angul district late on Thursday.
According to sources, the incident took place at around 2 am when Kashia Dehuri, a daily wage labourer, was returning home along with his wife Pankaji
ni and their daughter Kush was returning home through a mango orchard near Madhupur after watching a Danda Nacha performance. A rogue elephant suddenly charged at them. Kashia sustained injuries but managed to escape and ran to Madhupur village to alert residents. By the time he returned with help, the elephant had already trampled the mother and daughter to death on the spot.
Bantala police reached the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem. Forest department officials also arrived at the scene and have initiated an investigation. Compensation and support for the bereaved family are expected to be processed as per government norms in human-wildlife conflict cases.
