Sambalpur: A woman lost her life she reportedly jumped into the Mahanadi River from a bridge at Burla in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses said the woman moved onto the bridge while talking to someone on her mobile phone and l
eapt into the river despite repeated pleas by people present on the bridge to stop.
Several locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue her but their efforts were unsuccessful. The strong currents of the Mahanadi carried her away.
A police team from Burla reached the scene after being alerted. They managed to pull her out of the river but she had reported died by then. Police said the deceased was a resident of Burla.
Sources said the woman, whose parents live in Sambalpur, was married and staying in Burla. The exact circumstances that led to her extreme move remain unclear and officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause.
