Woman Dies By Suicide Soon After Marriage In Odisha’s Balasore, Parents Allege Dowry Death

Balasore: A woman allegedly died by suicide hardly two months after marriage due to dowry torture in Odisha’s Balasore district on Tuesday.

According to sources, the woman, identified as Laxmipriya Sethi of Serpur village under Khaira police station in the district, was married to Jagannath Das of Tentalagadia village under the same police limits on July 14. Laxmipriya’s family had given some dowry to the groom’s family at the time of marriage, which was performed as per Vedic rituals.

But, a few days after the marriage, she told her parents that Jagannath’s family members were demanding gold jewellery and cash as dowry and pressurising her in this regard. But her parents could not meet the demands due to their financial constraints.

On Tuesday morning, Jagannath informed Laxmipriya’s parents that she had committed suicide by hanging herself in her room.

On being informed, a team from Khaira police station went to Tentalagadia and sent the body for post-mortem. They also detained Jagannath and his mother Jayanti Das for questioning.

Speaking to media, Laxmipriya’s parents alleged that their daughter’s in-laws were torturing her since the day of marriage for dowry and killed her for the same.

The IIC of the police station, Mousumi Mohanty said investigation into all aspects was going on and necessary action would be taken against the suspects.
