Odisha government on Wednesday confirmed death of two persons due to sunstroke in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 36 in the state this summer.
Bhubaneswar: Even as Odisha government has confirmed death of 36 persons due to sunstroke, a woman died due to suspected heatstroke in the state on Sunday.
According to sources, the woman, identified as 62-year-old Karmi Hembram of Shyamsundar village under Rairangpur Rural police station in Mayurbhanj district, had gone for rearing goats in the forenoon. Some villagers found her dead under a tree in the grazing land in the afternoon.
As Karmi did not have any family members, the villagers informed the police. A team from Rairangpur Rural police station went to the village and sent the body for post-mortem to sub0-divisional hospital.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and started investigation. While the police said the cause of Karmi’s death would be known after getting the post-mortem report, the villagers claimed that she died due to sunstroke.
It may be noted that the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) had said on June 5 that total 149 alleged sunstroke death cases had been reported by the collectors as on June 4. Of these cases, the cause of death of 34 victims had been confirmed to be sunstroke casualties. Two more alleged sunstroke death cases were reported on the day taking the toll due to sunstroke to 36 in the state, it added.
