Dhenkanal: Tension gripped Bhalumunda Chhak in Dhenkanal district on Monday as locals staged a blockade following the death of a woman in an elephant attack.
The incident took place at Khalibahal village of Kandarasinha panchayat under Dihadola forest section of Mahabiroda range in Dhenkanal Forest Division.
The deceased was identified as Nirupama Biswal, wife of Bhagawam Biswal who owns an ice-cream factory in the locality.
According to sources, the woman came face-to-face with the tusker while returning from morning walk at around 5.45 am. The tusker grabbed her with its truck and battered her against a tree. She died on the spot.
When Nirupama did not return late in the morning, her husband searched for her and later found her body along the road near his house.
Irked over the incident, the villagers blocked the road demanding compensation for the bereaved family.
On being informed, police reached the spot and pacified the agitators.
