Keonjhar: A woman died after being hit by a jeep on National Highway-20 near Melana Chhack under Ghatagaon police station limits in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Radhika Tanti, a resident of Melana village.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of an SUV hit the woman riding on a bicycle while she was crossing the road, killing her on the spot.
The incident took place at about 9.30 am.
Tension ran high soon after the incident as angry locals blocked the National Highway by burning tyres demanding adequate compensation to the family of the deceased and action against the driver who fled the spot after the mishap.
Owing to the blockade, a large number of both heavy and light vehicles were stranded on both sides of the busy road for more than three hours.
Ghatagaon Police rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
Efforts are on to nab the absconding driver, police said.
