Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly gangraped in front of her male friend on Gopalpur beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
As per sources, the police have detained seven persons in connection with the crime that reportedly took place on Sunday night. Efforts are on to apprehend some more persons allegedly involved in the incident.
The incident took place when the 20-year-old woman along with her male friend visited Gopalpur beach on the occasion of Raja festival.
A group of around 10 miscreants allegedly attacked the woman’s male friend and tied up his hands before sexually assaulting the victim, reports said.
Police said the survivor, an undergraduate student at a private college, filed a complaint at the Gopalpur police station, following which a case was registered.
As per the complaint, the woman and her male friend were sitting in an isolated area when around ten men approached them. The group took turns raping her after tying the hands of her friend.
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M, who visited the crime spot along with senior officers, said seven suspects have been detained and all of them are adults. They are being interrogated and efforts are on to nab some others in connection with the incident.
Medical examinations of both the survivor and the detained persons are being conducted as part of the ongoing investigation. Further details are awaited.
