Bhubaneswar: A court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced a 46-year-old woman to life imprisonment for murdering her friend in Old Town area of the capital city in 2019.
In its verdict pronounced on Friday, the court convicted Anisha Mitra and awarded life term for slitting the throat of her roommate, Alakananda Das, with a knife on January 19, 2019.
As per case records, it was found during probe that Anisha was distressed after learning about Das’s plans to marry, fearing tha
t it would end their friendship.
Cracks appeared in their friendship when Anisha came to know about Das’s marriage plans. Das was employed in a private company, while Mitra worked with an NGO. Mitra did not want Das to leave her.
Anisha stabbed Das to death after the latter refused to call off her engagement and live with her forever as roommates.
The two women were living together in a rented accommodation at Gauri Nagar under Lingaraj Station police limits when tensions escalated. Investigators revealed that the murder was carried out with chilling precision, shocking neighbours and sparking widespread outrage. Police arrested
Anisha soon after the crime and the case proceeded through years of investigation and trial.
Evidence presented in court included witness testimonies, forensic reports, and circumstantial details that established her role in the killing.
