Bhadrak: A young woman attempted suicide by consuming poison after allegedly being raped in Odisha’s Bhadrak district.
According to sources, the survivor was rescued in critical condition after the suicide attempt and initially rushed to Primary Health Centre at Dhamra for emergency treatment. As her health deteriorated further, she
was shifted to a private facility in Cuttack on Thursday, where she remains under intensive care.
Meanwhile, police have arrested a youth, who lives in their neighbourhood, late last night on the basis of a complaint lodged by her mother. He will be produced in court on Friday.
Police suspect that the duo were in a relationship that recently ended. The youth, unable to accept the breakup, allegedly sexually assaulted her while she was alone at home. Devastated by the trauma, the woman reportedly consumed poison in a bid to end her life, the sources added.
This incident, coming close on the heels of the alleged rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Baligaon panchayat in the district, has raised concerns over safety of woman.
