Bhubaneswar: Bikram Mishra, the would-be-husband of lawyer Dipali Priyadarshini Jena who had died under mysterious circumstances in October last year, surrendered in the sessions court here on Tuesday.
The court later remanded him to judicial custody and he was sent to Jharpada Jail.
Notably, the Commissionerate Police, in course of the investigation, had come to know that Dipali’s marriage was fixed with Bikram, a cosmetics trader of Balukhand village under Simulia police limits of Balasore district. After the marriage was fixed, he used to visit Dipali at her rented house at Indira Colony in Lingipur under Dhauli police limits, on the outskirts of the city.
A native of Basudeipur village in Bhadrak district, Dipali was staying in the rented house with her sister Sefali and mother.
The incident had taken place on October 19, 2019.
On the fateful day, Sefali received a call from Bikram at around 12.30 am saying that her sister had locked her room and was not responding. Later, she rushed to the Indira Colony and informed the police who arrived at the spot and broke into the room. Police found Dipali hanging from the ceiling with blood oozing out of the nose and mouth. The deceased had only undergarments on her body. Police also found two mobile phones on the cot and some empty liquor bottles and half-burnt cigarettes near the house.
After recording Sefali’s statement, police tried to contact Bikram but his mobile phone was switched off.
Apprehending arrest, Bikram later moved the High Court for an advance bail. However, the court asked him to surrender in the lower court.
