Balasore: A woman reportedly kept her two sons as “mortgage” in order to pay for her husband’s treatment at Astia village under Opada block in Odisha’s Balasore district.

According to media reports, the woman, Paan Hansda, “mortgaged her sons” to avail a loan of Rs 2,000 from a private money-lender three months ago. Her husband Samaa Hansda, however, could not be saved.

The woman from whom she had taken the loan claimed that Paan had taken Rs 5,000 from her and allegedly refused to hand the children back. Paan used to walk 15 km every day to meet her sons, according to the reports.

The children were rescued after the intervention of the district administration.
