Kendrapada: A 32-year-old married woman and her paramour have been arrested for allegedly killing her 3-year-old son and burying the body in a village in Odisha’s Kendrapada district.

The gruesome incident took place at Matiapada village under Pattamundai police limits on Sunday and the two were arrested after the body of the child was exhumed on Monday.

A police team retrieved the body in the presence of a magistrate after the boy’s elder sister alleged that her mother, Sasmita Nath and her paramour, Laxmidhar Bai (26), had killed the child.

“A case under Sections 302 and 201 of IPC has been registered and the body sent to the district headquarters hospital for postmortem,” said Pattamundai police station IIC Tapan Rout.

He further said that Sasmita’s husband, Sukant Nath, had been working as a plumber in Bengaluru for the last two years. In his absence, the woman got into a relationship with Laxmidhari, her daughter’s tuition teacher. He used to visit their house to teach the girl.

An investigation is in progress and efforts are on to ascertain the motive behind the crime and modus operandi adopted by the accused, the IIC added.
