Berhampur: Police are on the lookout for a woman who posed as a top electricity official and duped crores of rupees from people here with a fake investment scheme.
The matter came to lime light when a complaint was lodged against her at Baidyanathpur police station.
According to sources, the accused woman was staying in a rented house at Ayodhya Nagar here. She introduced herself as the Odisha chief of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) with her office at Golabandha near Berhampur.
She allegedly lured people to invest in a ‘Nominee Investment Plan’, with the promise of high returns. Many senior citizens gave her money.
The accused even paid some money to the depositors after two months. For instance, she paid Rs 1.5 lakh as interest to one Laxmicharan Panigrahi for depositing Rs 15 lakh.
Then one day she vanished with all the money. Later, an RTI query revealed that there is an organisation called Central Electricity Authority, but it does not have an office at Golabandha. Plus, the organisation has no woman employee.
Police said investigation was on to arrest the accused.
